Treatments

Nothing stays the same forever! Once you are finished your active treatment we would like to monitor your progress in your retainers (included in fee) for at least one year. However, Dr. Mark always says that retention is a lifetime endeavour. Please continue to wear your retainers and feel free to come in for annual checks to ensure that your beautiful, healthy smile stays that way.

Early Treatment

The American Association of Orthodontists and the Canadian Association of Orthodontists recommend that a child’s first visit to an orthodontist occur no later than age 7. Certain problems, if detected at this time, are much easier to correct.

Early interceptive orthopaedic orthodontic treatment or 'Early Treatment' allows for correction of growth related problems such as jaw relationship issues including overbites, under bites, narrow jaws, cross bites and imbalances in jaw length. Appliances usually correct most functional bite related issues.

Even though all the adult teeth are not yet present, early treatment will address and correct the functional aspects of the bite. In many cases, this is all that a person may require for the health and fit of the bite. In some cases, a second phase of orthodontics is needed or desired to address the aesthetics or look of the teeth ~ braces or Invisalign are options for this second phase of treatment.

Early Treatment with Dr. Rykiss usually involves the wearing of two sets of growth appliances. The first set helps to create room in the mouth and evens out the arch shape and size. The second set of appliances addresses other bite related issues. In some cases, Dr. Rykiss may talk about adding some braces to the upper and lower front teeth which will be included in the early treatment program. All appliances are custom built in our labs. We have a choice of colours including glow-in-the-dark, sparkle and can add an image inside your retainer (Sponge Bob, Hannah Montana, hearts, cars, hockey sticks etc.) Bring in your own image (anything you want as long as it is about the size of a dime) and we can add it to your appliances.

Dr. Rykiss suggests a (complimentary) consultation if any of the following issues are present:

» Early loss of baby teeth or baby teeth that are late to fall out
» Protruding front teeth (research shows that if the upper front teeth are forward from the lower by 6mm or more, a child has a 1 in 3 chance of tooth fracture)
» Severe overlap of the upper teeth over the lower teeth (deep bite)
» Front teeth that do not meet with the lower and instead have an opening between upper and lower (open bite)
» Teeth that don’t meet properly
» Significant crowding or spacing, or poorly aligned teeth
» Under bites (upper front teeth are behind the lower front teeth)
» Jaws where the width of the upper and lower jaws are not fitting properly (e.g. the upper back teeth fit inside the lower back teeth)
» Cross bites (upper tooth inside the lower arch or lower teeth outside the upper arch)
» Oral habits such as sucking of thumb, finger, soothers, or other oral habits after the age of 4
» Situations when a child’s self-esteem is being negatively affected by the appearance of the teeth

Adult Treatment

Treatment options will be discussed at the initial exam. Dental records may be taken that day or at a later date of your choice. Dental records are taken on all our patients prior to active treatment.

Patients choosing braces will return to have their braces "put on" or bonded to the teeth. This appointment may vary in length from 1 - 2 hours. While your braces are being bonded, you will relax, watch television or listen as each step is explained to you.

Patients choosing Invisalign® or a similar removable aligner will need to have special impressions taken after their initial records appointment. This process will be fully explained at your initial consultation. Invisalign® impressions may be taken on the same day as your general records appointments. Your first sets of Invisalign aligners will arrive approximately six weeks after this date. While you wait your Invisalign®, we will provide you with some trial aligners, and complimentary bleach so that you can become accustomed to wearing aligners.

We know that orthodontic treatment is an investment that will last a lifetime. By the end of your first visit, we will answer your questions and ensure that you feel comfortable and confident with your treatment plan.
